Every day, discoveries are made in the field of medical science. The field of dentistry, being a part of medical science, is no exception. Much advancement has been made in the field of dentistry recently and it will continue to happen in future as well. These advancements have proved to be beneficial.
Earlier, not only children but the grownups were also sacred of going to their dentists. However, visiting the dentists has become much pleasant due to the recent advancements. Some of these advancements have made detection of diseases easier while others have made the treatment less painful. Following are a few advancements in the field of dentistry:
- Digital X-Rays
Traditional X-Rays have been improved and an advanced version of them is available which is known as Digital X-Rays. They are more efficient than the traditional X-Rays as they have a few benefits over the traditional ones. One of the benefits is that they require less radiation and are developed in less time. In addition to this, Digital X-Rays have software which enables the dentists to diagnose the problem areas better than traditional X-Rays. Moreover, if a patient needs a copy of X-Ray, it can be send to him (or her) via an e-mail, thus, preventing the patients from carrying a copy of X-Ray with them.
- Intraoral camera
Intraoral camera is a technology that is becoming very popular among the dentists as well as the patients. It is a little camera that is attached to the end of the hand held tools. As the dentist diagnoses the disease by manipulating the tool into the patient’s mouth, the images are projected on the screen and the patient can see what all is going on. This would make the treatment less scary and more interesting to the patient.
- Detection of oral cancer using Velscope
Velscope is an improved way of detecting the oral cancer. It is attached to a hand held device and induces a blue light on the tissues of patient’s mouth. The tissues which are normal absorb this blue light and emit a pale green light. Whereas, an abnormal tissue appears dark or dark brown. Thus, it is an easy way of detecting the disease.
- Candy that eats bad bacteria
Our mouth has good as well as bad bacteria. The motive behind cleaning our mouth is to get rid of bad bacteria (in order to prevent ourselves from tooth cavity) and thriving of good bacteria in our mouth. A recent advancement has developed a sugar free candy which contains dead bacteria that combines with bad bacteria and reduces cavities.
- Tooth implants
It is one of the leading advancements in dentistry because of its accurate functioning of replacing of tooth. Any person who wants to replace a tooth can undergo this procedure. The time required to complete the procedure is very less.
Dental technology has come a long way. Rather than using the traditional methods of detection of diseases, the more advanced and better methods have come into practice. Patients are also facing less discomfort, less pain and are finding it interesting to watch the progress of their treatment on the monitor screens.
