If your family is expecting a baby, then a diaper bag is an absolute must have. From the moment you are preparing your bag for the hospital and until your baby grows, the nappy bag needs to be with you wherever you go. But what should it contain? Many mommies to be ask this question as they want to be as prepared as possible for the new family member’s arrival. Here are a few tips about what shouldn’t miss from your baggage, even if you only step out for some groceries.
What you really need in the diaper bag depends on how long you will be out, where you are going, how prepared you want to be and especially how old your child is. The most important thing you have to put in the bag is diapers, of course. Think about how long you will be away and put one diaper for one hour and a few extra because you never know what may happen. You won’t be sorry if you have too many, but you will be if you run out.
Another essential in the luggage is wipes. If you’ll be out for only a few hours, then you can put about ten pieces in a plastic, bag, but if you go for a longer period, just put a whole package. Wipes are good not only for diaper change but for sticky hands, runny nose or any kind of dirty surface. You should also put some plastic or biodegradable bags in the nappy bag. These bags are good for the dirty diapers, clothes or blankets. But be careful not to let your child close to them because they can cause suffocation, even the biodegradable ones.
If you are bottle-feeding then a bottle of breast milk or formula shouldn’t miss from the bag, even if you go out for a short time. Children can get hungry within minutes and you don’t want to go all through the mall with a crying baby. You will also need a changing pad, that might come with the diaper bag or you could buy it separately. Some parents prefer the disposable pads for travelling, but you could also use a hand towel from home. And some hand sanitizer will also be useful if you can’t wash your hand after changing the diapers.
If you want to be very well prepared, you could also put some extras in the nappy bag. For example, if the baby has sensitive skin, then a diaper rash cream is a must. If you are breastfeeding, you might also find it useful to have a nursing cover to hide your breast. It is more comfortable than a regular blanket and gives you and your baby some privacy. And if you want to save the precious moments, you should definitely take a camera with you.
A diaper bag is absolutely necessary if you have a child. So if you don’t have one yet, it is just about the time to purchase the perfect one for you and your baby.
