There are two aspects about epoxy floors that you should know about. One is about how to do the epoxy coating in your home without calling an expert and the other is how to keep safe when you are going about this job. A layer of epoxy floor is excellent for your original floor because an epoxy layer adds strength and durability to it. Once applied epoxy can last for years and in some cases, has been known to last through multiple generations.
Epoxy is a resin-based chemical that is mixed with a hardening substance to create a viscous element. This element is coated over a floor and allowed to dry and set. Once dried it forms a thin, plastic like layer on the floor and offers more than adequate protection. These days you can also mix quartz and granite and other chips and flakes to add a touch of decoration to your epoxy floor.
Doing epoxy floors is somewhat like painting but before you go about the job it is highly recommended that you watch some instructional videos. YouTube is very handy in this case. You will get full videos that tell you how this form of flooring should be done. Once you are comfortable you can get started and the entire job will be finished within a week depending on the size of your home and the number of rooms you want to cover with epoxy floor.
Before epoxy coating is applied there are two things you need to do. The first is to see whether there is any moisture. Just tape a plastic sheet to the floor and keep it there for a day or two. If you find moisture underneath the plastic epoxy flooring is not recommended. You may have to call someone to get rid of the moisture. The second is to fill up all the cracks and make the surface smooth. This can be done using a sander or plain sandpaper. This prepares your floors for covering with epoxy floors.
A layer of water first needs to be created on the floor and a can (or as many required) of epoxy primer should then be emptied on it. The epoxy now needs to be rolled smoothly on the floor. A rolling pin should work perfectly in this case. Once this layer of epoxy gets dried you will need to add another layer of epoxy finisher. Allow this layer to dry and set and you are done.
The precautions while doing your epoxy floor are pretty clear. You should wear gloves, a coverall and protective eyewear so that your skin and eyes don’t come in contact with the chemical. If it happens ensure that you clean the area in running water. Use a mild soap and avoid scrubbers. Also keep the room well ventilated to let the fumes out.
Keep these points in mind about epoxy floors and you can do the job yourself. You will be proud of your work once your epoxy floor is ready.
