Tomcat load balancing can be used with different web servers and also as a channel with its own web server. A load balancing device does not directly communicate with a Tomcat server- it manages the sub-work of the load balancer.
Only one or some components of Tomcat load balancing is used at a time depending on the requirement of an application. A number of load balancing methods are used for Tomcat servers and the most effective of them is Round Robin. All the servers in the cluster to which the virtual service has been assigned to run on equal load in this method. This is a very simple process which needs all the servers in the cluster to be of the same capacity. In case they are not so, application delivery gets hampered because when a less compatible server is unable to process a high value application and overload failures creep in.
Weighted round robin is a load balancing method which takes care of the disadvantages of the former method and works by redirecting incoming requests to all servers in a sequential manner. This is a very efficient method in cases when the static weight on a server is decided beforehand.
The method of least connection for load balancing proved to be a revolutionary one in terms of selecting the least burdened server. The incoming request lands at the server which has got the least number of connections at an instant instead of being received by the particular server in sequence. Hence load does not accumulate on any server in the cluster and this completely eradicates any possibility of “no response error”. Another Tomcat load balancing method is agent-based adaptive balancing where each server in the cluster is checked periodically to ensure that there’s no overload. Weighted response is an advanced load balancing method in which healthcheck requests are sent to servers and load on it is judged from the response time. In this way, Tomcat servers keep on operating successfully.
