Homeowners really valued those homes that have plaster walls in prime condition. It is solid, beautiful and especially good a soundproofing rooms. No doubt, plaster is good-looking surface and durable both, but have only one drawback that, it inevitably develops cracks or damages. It is one of the most common form of interior wall finishing. Metal furring system plays a vital role in interior designing with plasterboard. It supports the wall and make it stronger and more durable. This was traditional way and replaced by gypsum boards called drywall. As it is less costly, easy to install and easy to repair. Whether it is plaster, drywall or concrete, walls of house are susceptible to cracks.
If we look at the reasons of cracks, holes or plaster damages, they can be multiple. Some plaster is of very poor quality that cause the plaster to crumble and crack after some time. The most common reason is water damage from plumbing leaks or roof, can discolor plaster. They cause efflorescence or peeling, the leakage of salts and minerals to the surface. Other small and common reasons can be scratches rom furniture, spilled liquids, holes from wall hangings etc. the simple problems can be fixed easily. Here are steps which will help you to repair crack on the plaster walls.
Score the crack with dull utility knife to open the edges of the crack. Make the opening wider and more clean-lined. While reserving structural integrity, remove debris of surface around it. Clean the loose plaster away.
In this step, you have to make a solution of plaster of Paris to coat the crack of the wall. You have to make thick ate of later of Paris with water. Firstly, wet the crack thoroughly with the help of paint brush and water. Now, pack the crack with plaster of Paris to its full depth. Make it a smooth surface, take help of scraper or towel. After filling the crack, let’s dry it at least 24 hours.
When the plaster is dry, lightly sand patch with medium-or fine-grade sandpaper. If the crack was wider, you can simply plaster it once again to make perfect smooth surface. Do not repack the paste over it, you have to rewet the plaster before applying. Always give time to dry the area for at least 24 hours. Then again use sandpaper to smooth the surface.
This is the last and final step where you have to just give finishing touch. Most of the time cracks became a reason of new designs or new paint on the wall. At this step, you have to just rime it with tinned coat of paint or wall primer. When the primer is dry, you can simply paint your entire wall.
This is the most simple and easy way of repairing the plaster wall crack. It is not cost-effective. Moreover, for support, you can cover wet crack with tape at step 2. Simply, plaster is a material used for the decorative or protective coating of walls and ceiling. Moreover, it also use for casting and molding decorative elements.
