Taking care of your mobility on vacation is always a good idea. This is the only way to have a chance to explore the country far from the usual tourist routes and maybe discover one or two things that would otherwise have escaped you. But when I wanted to rent a car in Karachi on my last vacation for the first time, I was really overwhelmed. The most diverse online providers come with fantastic offers, and of course, everything is particularly cheap and easy. In the end, there were a few misunderstandings at the pick-up counter, and this experience has taught me to always keep a watchful eye on supposed cheap deals. To spare you the same fate, here are my seven tips for renting a car on vacation:
1. FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDATION OF OTHER CUSTOMERS WHEN RENTING A CAR ON VACATION
Especially when you book your car for the next vacation on the Internet, you should pay attention to many aspects. As the first and most important tip when renting a car: Read certain user feedback of the rental business in question. You can rely most of the time on the opinion of previous customers. The evaluation options, for example, on Google or Facebook, provide a good first impression and can usually limit the choice of provider right from the start. Is the reliability of the provider repeatedly questioned, and the contract execution evaluated negatively? Hands off!
2. THE RENTAL CONTRACT FOR YOUR CAR
You have informed yourself and decided on a provider? Well. Then a little hard work is coming up to you. It is now important to read the lease carefully. The rental contract should cover all aspects of the rental: the included services, regulations for filling the tank and additional services such as additional drivers, the deposit and how it is performed, the pick-up and return location, and the agreed times. Never let yourself be pushed for a signature when renting a car, but take your time to clarify any questions.
3. FREE KILOMETERS AND FUEL CONTROL OF YOUR RENTAL CAR
If you can roughly estimate how much you will drive, you should pay special attention to the free kilometers with the providers. Some rental companies already include 500 kilometers a day in the rental price, each additional kilometer driven is then charged at an additional cost and is payable after the vehicle has been handed over. Especially on vacation, it makes sense to look for vehicles with no mileage limit. Most of the time, the rental price is a little higher when you look at the price for the additional kilometers, but you quickly notice that it’s worth it. So you are flexible on vacation and do not have to worry.
You should also be vigilant with the tank control. A few years ago, car rental companies came under criticism for having specified a “full/empty” arrangement in the contracts. This means that although you will get a full tank, you should bring the car back empty. The refueling will then be invoiced, plus a processing fee. To protect yourself from this, you should insist on a “full/full” rule when booking: here you fill-up the car yourself before handing it over. Nevertheless, it is best to document the fuel level before driving, because the car only has to be returned as fully refueled as you picked it up.
Pay close attention to the mileage and the tank filling
4. INSURANCE OF YOUR RENTAL CAR
Which insurance you really value is up to you. Some swear to fully comprehensive insurance, while others are lucky. With some providers, important insurance is already covered for a little extra charge. I’m more of the “better a little too much than too little” type and therefore look for appropriate offers. For most, extensive protection from liability, comprehensive insurance, and theft insurance is important. Always a good tip: Do not take any offers with a deductible, because that means that you have to pay a deductible in the event of damage. So take a look at the rental conditions or choose the option without a deductible.
5. DOCUMENTATION OF YOUR CAR RENTAL ON VACATION
Finally, all contract formalities have been completed, and you would like to receive your vehicle. A revered company must execute a handover process for you, and would report your past claims and miles. Nonetheless, you should and will take your camera out to record the car’s exterior presence. When the tank is not entirely loaded, you may also take a snapshot of the tank depth.Be sure also to check the tires: they should, of course, be undamaged and have a tread depth of more than 2 mm.
6. PAYMENT OF THE RENTAL CAR
Many online providers offer you particularly favorable conditions if you book the car immediately. Mostly it is just a few dollars, but can make the difference with a tight holiday budget. However, it is recommended that you only pay for the car when you pick it up. So you can rule out that you suddenly sit on the roadside without a vehicle, but instead with a charged credit card. This also helps you to see the vehicles in advance. Most providers offer payment by credit card (no prepaid and debit cards). In general, cash payment is not necessary and should be regarded critically if given. Having your own credit card makes it easier to rent a car on vacation
7. THE EARLY BIRD BOOKS THE BEST RENTAL CAR ON VACATION
As is always the case in life, it is worth being swift when it comes to renting a car! Demand decides the price particularly during holidays in high season.. If the holiday destination has been clear for a long time, you should not wait long to reserve a car. The costs often increase over time. Another advantage of early booking: The probability that my dream car is actually available is much higher.
